Eela completes one year of good results

The European Union approves first project phase

On February 27 and 28, it was held in Spain the evaluation meeting of the Eela project (Shared e-Infrastructure between Europe and Latin America). According to the appraisers of the European Union, who fund the Eela, most of the goals for the first year of the project were fulfilled. In May, Eela’s members will be presenting Eela Project 2, relative to period 2008/2009, before the European Commission.

Representatives of the ten countries involved in the project, among them, technicians from the National Education and Research Network (RNP) have heard from the appraisers that the goals, such as the implementation of computation and warehousing resource centers, were overcome. The initial objective was the installation of 12 centers, but 16 centers have already been created. Two of them are in Brazil – at UFRJ and at UFF.

RNP and the Iris Network (Spanish academic network) have also succeeded in the establishment of the requirements of the network that the applications need. And the certifying Latin America authority – a sort of passport for the execution of applications in LA and Europe – has been installed. In turn, the engineering group of the network of Latin American Cooperation of Advanced Networks (ClaraNeg), headed by Eriko Porto, of RNP, concluded the survey of the present situation of the network infrastructure in LA.

The balance of RNP’s Innovation Director, Michael Stanton, is positive. “The cooperation between Europe and Latin America is working well. “Those attending the meeting have highlighted the role of the Clara Network to make the infrastructure of e-Science between the two continents possible”, he says.

Now the main challenge is the use of the infrastructure installed by the new Eela applications, such as remote education and climate studies.

The meeting in Spain has further presented the results of projects EuMedGrid, between European countries and Mediterranean countries, and EuChina Grid, between Europe and China.
