Workshop Bravo

Project will facilitate access to astronomic images

In February, the First Workshop of the Bravo (Brazilian Astrophysical Virtual Observatory) Project was held . Coordinated by the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe) and financed by the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa de São Paulo, Bravo is an important step toward the creation of the Observatório Virtual Brasileiro (BR-VO).

The objective of a virtual observatory (VO) is to allow an even easy access to the bases of celestial images stored in digital repositories. To make this approach more powerful, the articulation of a federation of virtual observatories is foreseen in countries where there already are astronomic collections. The key to the well-succeeded interoperation of these observatories is the adoption of cataloguing uniform patterns. To this effect, the International Alliance of Virtual Observatory was made up.

Bravo’s workshop displayed the operation of a VO and covered the contribution that the information and communication technology can bring to astronomy. In his lecture, RNP’s Innovation Director, Michael Stanton, explained how RNP can help the scientific communities with special network demands. There were also lectures made by astronomers and IT specialists from USP, from UFRJ, from the National Observatory, from INPE, from the Renato Archer Research Center and from the National Laboratory of Scientific Computation. The main guest was the project manager of the Virtual Observatory of the United States and scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute of Johns Hopkins University (USA), Robert Hanisch.
