Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay have a proposal for Information Society

Expectations are that RNP be responsible for the management of the project


The Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP) has hosted the joint meeting of the Information Society Commission, of the Specialized Meeting on Science and Technology of Mercosul, of the Electronic Commerce Work Subgroup of Mercosul (SGT-13) and representatives of the European Commission in Rio de Janeiro on January 24 and 25. The objective of the meeting was to revise the proposal and the technical / administrative provisions of the support project to the Information Society of Mercosul.

The project, which envisages the cooperation between Mercosul and the European Union in activities related with information society, intends, during the first three months, to develop pilot applications, qualify people and disseminate best practices by means of a Virtual School of Information Society. The idea is to provide knowledge and management skills too people who can contribute with the development of information society and establish a cooperation network between Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, reducing contrasts in the area of information society.

The expectation is that RNP perform the management of the project, supporting the actions of Recyt and SGT-13 in the four countries. The project, which should be submitted to the European Union for financing, is quoted at around 9.6 million euros, of which 2.6 million will come from the four countries of Mercosul involved in the project.

Participants of the coordinators’ meeting of the Information Society Commission of Recyt, of SGT-13 of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, as well as representatives of the European Commission. Nelson Simões, general director, Wilson Coury, management and planning director, and project coordinator, José Luiz Ribeiro Filho were RNP participating representatives.
