RNP makes development of hard-of-hearing handicapped teachers possible

Course is unheard of in Brazil

Nine Brazilian teaching institutions participate in the first remote graduate course to establish hard-of-hearing handicapped teachers.

About five hundred students already have classes in LIBRAS (Brazilian Sign Language) through the Internet and exchange experience by videoconference by means of Ipê Network, an infrastructure of the Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP).

The project, an initiative of the Ministry of Education, already attends to the University of São Paulo (USP) and the federal universities of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brasília (UnB), Santa Maria (UFSM), Ceará (UFC), Bahia (UFBA) and Amazonas (UFAM), in addition to the Instituto Nacional de Educação de Surdos (RJ) [National Institute for the Education of the Deaf] and Cefet of Goiânia (GO). The course takes four years and more than 70% of the students are deaf.
