![]() | Approved WGs for 2006-2007Four prototypes of previous WGs will change into experimental services The working groups (WGs) for 2006-2007 were approved by RNP’s Executive Board of Directors on October 19th. These WGs had been selected by Research Assessment Group (GAP) and by an evaluation committee. Next year, besides investing in new working groups, RNP will continue the research done by the four 2005-2006 working groups, selected for the implementation phase of an experimental service. They are: video management, digital TV, mesh network and measurements. The three new WGs selected among 34 proposals are: Distance Learning Infrastructure (WG IEAD), Virtual Community Grid (WG VCD) and Diagnosis Automation and Failure Recovery (WG ADReF). WG IEAD intends to develop an infrastructure for distance learning in which the institutions linked to Ipê network are able to choose an auditorium or a meeting room and routinely send their video signals and high quality presentation slides to thousands of participants using multicast technology. Such a resource will promote interactivity with live questions through video or via SMS. WG VCD aims to build a computational grid infrastructure to aggregate resources by affiliation, which will allow all the registered users to submit their works to the grid by means of a credit system. The users will accumulate credits as they make their computational resources available, even if they are not completely utilized. The calculation of the credits acquisition will take into account the time, amount and quality of the resources made available. WG ADReF aims to investigate common failures found during the operation and maintenance of high speed networks and to develop automated devices for diagnosis and recovery of those failures. These devices are based on workflows, which represent the testing procedures on equipments and on the network resources that will allow the diagnosis and recovery of the failures detected. The Working Groups Program was launched in 2002 and is coordinated by RNP’s Innovation Management, whose objective is to enable the creation of collaborative projects between RNP and national research groups in the area of new protocols, services and applications of computer networks.
