Minister opens the event with a message from President Fernando Henrique Cardoso

The Exhibition and Forum of Technological Innovation was open, on July 30th, with a lunch which gathered federal, state and municipal authorities, deans, presidents of organizations, private enterprises, institutes, research centers and leaders of the technological sectors in Brazil. During the event, Ronaldo Mota Sardenberg, Minister of Science and Technology, summoned all the sectors of the national life to get engaged in the "innovation cause."

According to the Minister, the main purpose of the event was "showing the importance of technology and its effects in spreading a favorable environment to the incorporation of the technological component to Brazilian production." Sardenberg stressed the governmental concern with "stimulating and intensifying the work favoring the promotion of knowledge and its transformation into effective technological development that can reach and benefit all the society."

Since the motto was technology, ingredients developed by Embrapa - Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - made up the menu of the lunch that opened the event. Dishes such as goosefoot salad, light rolled pork and cashew moqueca (a kind of stew, typical of Bahia) were served. Among the drinks, there were graviola, cupuaçu and bacuri juices. The dessert included dried peaches, cupuaçu jam and cagaita and mangaba pudding, besides fruits such as atemóia, umbu and grapes, all of them grown with technology developed at Embrapa.

Upon finishing his speech, Sardenberg read a message written by President Fernando Henrique Cardoso. In the text, the president refers to the Exhibition and Forum of Technological Innovation as "an example of a joint effort and a demonstration of the great Brazilian potential to take the technological leap necessary to the economic and social development." Fernando Henrique claims that the government has elected the year 2002 as the year of innovation in Brazil.
