RNP participates in Exhibition and Forum of Technological Innovation

From July 30th to August 3rd, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) and Finep (an organization that finances studies and projects) promoted the Exhibition and Forum of Technological Innovation and Applied Technologies in the Productive Network. The aim of the event was showing the technologies developed in Brazil or adapted to national projects, besides fostering discussions about managing the innovation in small, medium-sized and big companies as well as in research centers.

RNP and the High Performance Metropolitan Network (ReMAV) in Natal took advantage of the situation to show the possibilities of using the network for video transmission. During the five days of the event, a video monitor at RNP's stand exhibited the programming of Natal University TV (TVU) live. According to Guido Lemos, coordinator of the experiment, the image was received by a TV antenna in the ReMAV, digitized and transmitted through the network from RNP's Point of Presence in Rio Grande do Norte (PoP-RN) to the Point of Presence in São Paulo (PoP-SP). From PoP-SP to Expo Center Norte, where the event was taking place, the data followed through four E-1 cables belonging to Telefônica, with a 2 Mbps capacity each. The delay between the signal sent from Natal and the images received at the stand was of only 1 to 2 seconds. In order for the experiment to be possible, RNP configured an exclusive 8 Mbps link between the PoPs in Rio Grande do Norte and São Paulo.

"Our purpose is showing that RNP has conditions to give support to Internet2 applications. We intend to prove, for instance, that if TV Cultura wishes to, it can use RNP in order to distribute video to several Rede Brasil networks of educational TVs, " declared Guido Lemos. Dyna Video, the video server used in the experiment, was developed by ReMAV's staff in Natal with the aim of making TVU's video collection available to the users connected to NatalNet network.

Forum reinforces MCT's commitment

In the evaluation of Carlos Américo Pacheco, executive secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), the Exhibition and Forum of Technological Innovation completes two cycles: it reinforces MCT's commitment to promote technological development and actually involves the private sector." With the forum, we open new lines of communication joining the government, universities, research centers and the productive sector, reinforce our alliance and build a new consensus towards progress," claimed Ronaldo Mota Sardenberg, Minister of Science and Technology, in the opening of the event.

The forum debates took place between July 30th and August 1st. On the last day, the director of management and innovation of CPqD (Centro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento em Telecomunicações) presented, among other projects, the Giga Network, which involves not only CPqD but also RNP, LARC (Laboratório Nacional de Redes de Computadores), Fapesp, and companies operating and manufacturing telecommunications equipment.

Mauro Marcondes Filho, president of Finep, highlighted the creative potential of the country. "Brazil has nothing to be ashamed of. When the country wants to do something, it does it well. It is by no means inferior to other countries," said Marcondes Filho. President Fernando Henrique Cardoso referred to the event as an "example of a joint effort and a demonstration of the great Brazilian potential to take the technological leap necessary to the economic and social development".
