![]() | III Workshop RNP2 transmitted part of its programming through the InternetOn May 21 and 22, the III Workshop RNP2 (WRNP2) was held. This event was sponsored by Cisco, Embratel, Marconi and Sun and took place, for the second year in a row, together with the Brazilian Symposium of Computer Networks(SBRC). During the two days, 235 researchers and professionals got together on the campus of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Florianópolis, and learned about the most important projects in the fields of network engineering, middleware and applications for high performance networks currently being developed in the country. This year, however, theory divided with practice the main position in the workshop. Some interdisciplinary and interinstitutional experiments showed, in loco and on-line, preliminary results of projects on multicast, transmission of digital video and use of IP service differentiation for the data flow in RNP2 backbone. The auditorium of UFSC's Reitoria, where part of the WRNP2 and SBRC's programming took place, also served as a laboratory of tests. Some of the sessions that happened there were transmitted on digital video(MPEG-2 format) with differentiated service(bandwidth reserve) on RNP2, in real time. The transmissions, pioneer in terms of academic events, were made on an experimental basis. Two moments are worth of note: the official opening of the event, which had the remote participation of the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Carlos Américo Pacheco, directly from Brasília and a duo of musicians that played a choro at a distance. Internet users in general watched the transmission in unicast mode. The multicast transmission was received only by RNP2 users in the regions whose PoPs configurated their equipment to this kind of transmission. Another revolutionary experiment was the transmission of the TV program "Brazil discovers the Internet2." Produced by the University TV (TV Universitária) in Natal - and TVU (from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte), the program was digitalized and transmitted through an exclusive ATM channel of 6 Mbps between RNP2's PoPs in the two states, to TV Cultura in Florianópolis, which decodified the signal and retransmitted it on broadcast. The program, which lasted 30 minutes, was aired on the 23rd , at 7:00 p.m. Besides the TVs and the PoPs, this transmission involved the ReMAVs in Natal and Florianópolis. For the transmission, DynaVideo, a video on demand application developed by the ReMAV in Natal, was used. This was the first experience interconnecting the ReMAVs. - The III WRNP2 was extremely important so that RNP could identify the cooperation potential among the institutions using the network, enterprises and ReMAV consortia in the development of the fields of network engineering, middleware and applications, declared RNP's director, Nelson Simões. José Suruagy, professor at LARC and UNIFACS, observed that the occurrence of the event together with the SBRC is important since it "permits a synergy of efforts with all the computer network community in order to make progress in this area." The debates about policies for new projects and activities in these areas were held from the viewpoint of the higher education teaching and research community in the presentation of studies and poster sessions. The videos of the technical and plenary sessions of III WRNP2 will be available in the site of the event. During the panel discussion "Implementing the Brazilian project for advanced networks," the representative of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Edmundo Pereira, highlighted the importance of the process of institutionalization of RNP, begun in 1999 and whose consolidation will take place with the transformation of RNP into a social organization.
