III WRNP2 shows national technology on advaced applications

Workshop RNP2 is an event devoted to Internet2 applications and high performance academic networks. Since 1999, it has been stimulating the development and the promotion of research projects on advanced network administration and new generation applications.

In the beginning, the material presented came exclusively from the High Performance Metropolitan Networks(ReMAVs). This year, however, researchers in general were encouraged to submit proposals of projects already carried out, currently being developed or made, whose scope was associated to one of three specific areas:network engineering, applications and middleware. The aim was to promote the interaction among groups sharing the same interests, forming partnerships in order to carry out joint experiments in the country as well as in the work groups participating in the Internet2 project.

The Program Committee of the III Workshop RNP2 received 67 proposals of projects to be presented during the event. Thirty- six of those proposals were selected, 18 of which dealing with network engineering, 17 with applications and only 1 with middleware.

Professor José Augusto Suruagy, from the Laboratory of Computer Design and Networks (LARC) and Salvador University (UNIFACS),regretted the fact that there were so few projects in the field of middleware. He urged researchers to invest in that area.

- This is an effort that will have to be made, in every college, for the question is not only a line of research; it is something that will really have to be implanted so as to permit all the network to funtion, warned Suruagy.

In the definition provided by professor Suruagy, middleware is a "set of specialized services, shared by the applications and by the users, having basic components capable of helping all the softwares."

The complete list of the studies presented during the III WRNP2, together with the e-mails of the lecturers, is available in the site of the event. The videos of the presentations will be published in the site as of July. In its next issue, RNP's electronic newsletter NewsGeneration will bring summaries of some of the projects presented in Florianópolis.
