Television broadcast between the Northeast and the South of Brazil is made through an RNP network

The people living in Santa Catarina (a state in the South of Brazil) could watch the program "Brazil discovers the Internet2", directly broadcast from the city of Natal (in Rio Grande do Norte, a state in the Northeast of the country) through an ATM network channel from RNP. The exhibition happened on May 23, on the local educational TV channel.

The 30-minute video was jointly produced by TV Universitária (TVU), from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, and TV Cultura, from Santa Catarina. The signal was transmitted through the ATM line connecting RNP's Points of Presence (PoPs) in the two states. From the High Performance Metropolitan Network (ReMAV) in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, it was retransmitted to TV Cultura-SC by optical fiber.

- The video is codified in MPEG-2 and broadcast live on a 6 Mbp ATM CBR channel. We are transmitting IP encapsuled in ATM and using a video server developed by us at ReMAV - says Guido Lemos, coordinator of the Metropolitan Network in Natal (NatalNet).

The software created by NatalNet was called DynaVideo (Dynamic Video Distribution Service) and was implemented to work using IP. The technicians in Natal intend to develop a native ATM interface to DynaVideo.

TVU's programs were broadcast live through the same channel during all the 19th Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks (SBRC), which took place in Florianópolis, between May 21 and 25.

6 Mbp link was possible thanks to RNP2

The 6 Mbp channel between the ReMAVs in Natal and Florianópolis is exclusive and does not have contact with the rest of the national network. Through this channel, only the traffic of the video transmission project flows. The Internet production traffic continues being made normally through RNP2 backbone. The experiment with the national academic backbone made it possible to rent this new line from Embratel. The contract made with the operator in order to implement RNP2 facilitates the installation of these new experimental lines.

This should be just the first step to interconnect the ReMAVs. According to the manager of the Engineering and Operation Center at RNP, Ari Frazão Júnior, "it is possible to activate other similar channels if the ReMAVs create joint projects demanding such infrastructures." The 6 Mbp link between Natal and Florianópolis is temporary and has been operating since March. When the experiments are over, the link will be inactivated.
