| RNP has promoted national and international events linked to professional qualification
Since RNP is an institution with the mission of operating an Internet backbone service aimed at the teaching and research community in Brazil, the training of specialized personnel, able to operate the network and follow the implantation of new technologies, is of utmost importance. Internal qualification is a priority, but RNP also invests in the public outside, participating in lectures and offering open events, such as the II Workshop RNP2 and the workshop Human Resources Formation on Information Technology for the State of Rio de Janeiro.
RNP offers a course in Mozambique
In terms of events to the public in general, the course Security in Internet Networks is worth of praise. The course was promoted by RNP, UNESCO and Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), in Maputo, Mozambique, in March. RNP technicians faced the rain that almost flooded the country in February in order to prepare around 20 students - all of them from Mozambique, except for a Timorese living in the country.
The class, consisting of technicians, students and UEM administration workers, received 22 hours of training between March 14 and 17. The program covered basic topics related to networks, communication protocols, Unix operational system and aspects of network security. "The receptivity was great. Everyone was very dedicated and willing to learn", declared Renata Cicilini, from the Security Incident Response Team (CAIS) at RNP, upon returning to Brazil.
Minister launches new backbone during a workshop
In May, the II Workshop RNP2 was held, in the campus of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, with the presence of the minister of Sciece and Technology, Ronaldo Mota Sardenberg, as well as foreign lecturers. Representatives of the 14 High Performance Metropolitan Networks (ReMAVs) were present to talk about their experiences and discuss the future of the project. During the event, RNP2, the high performance backbone, was launched. The presentations made during the II Workshop RNP2 are being edited in order to be published in 2001.
Event discusses strategies to form Information Technology professionals
A regional event, whose aim was to create strategies for professional qualification, was promoted by Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ) and organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) and by RNP in the beginning of September, at IMPA. The workshop Human Resources Formation on Information Technology for the State of Rio de Janeiro gathered several professionals, technicians and researchers, organized in Theme Groups (TG). The result of their work is available in the site of the event (in Portuguese), created by RNP's staff. The consolidation of the debates will be transformed into a book, to be released in 2001, containing the reports of each TG and showing points of agreement and disagreement among the groups.
Systems Administration for beginners
In October, RNP offered two courses on TCP-IP network administration and operation to the beginning technicians of the PoPs in the North and Northeast of Brazil. The courses, lasting 40 hours, aimed at reflecting the real needs and the several levels of action of a network administrator, with practical activities and the use of managing and administrative support tools.
In a partnership between Paraná's PoP and RNP, five classes of Training on Network Administration and Internet Support were offered from June to December. The target audience of the course consisted of support analysts,Computer Science managers and /or project and support teams working for TCP/IP corporate networks and Internet servers.
In-house Workshop updates the technicians operating RNP2
The In-house Workshop was the last great event of the year. The sixth edition of the most important training event at RNP took place between December 11 and 15, in Campinas. This seminar is offered exclusively to the professionals who operate the academic backbone, and its aim is to keep the high technical level of the people working at the Points of Presence (PoPs). This year, 80 technicians attended a program divided in two areas: operation and network security. During the seminar, there were lectures open to the public. The lectures were transmitted in real time to RNP's staff by multicast and are available for download.
Public Virtual University uses RNP2
The Public Virtual University in Brazil (UNIREDE), a consortium made up of 33 public universities in January, will have RNP2 as the infrastructure connecting these institutions so as to enable them to use applications adopting Internet network technology as a platform to distance teaching. The purpose of UNIREDE is to offer a set of strategic applications specially devised for a Remedial Program of High Public Education, spreading assisted education by interactive means through the Internet, videoconference and other educational media.
