NTP stratum 1 server is the first in Brazil

In July 2000, RNP installed, in Brasília, an antenna which receives information from satellites in order to tell time with practically complete precision. It feeds a public NTP stratum 1 server with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. NTP ( Network Time Protocol) servers allow their customers to synchronize their equipment clocks according to devices known as "reference clocks", among which there are GPS receivers. The servers connected directly to the reference clocks are called stratum 1. NTP servers which use the stratum 1 servers as a reference are called stratum 2 and so forth.

This is the first NTP stratum 1 server installed in the country. In September, RNP published a manual for the installation of NTP services in local networks, and it is organizing a stratum 2 hierarchy to be used by the public in general, starting from its Points of Presence (PoPs), state networks and other authorized networks.
