Hotline to network operation centers

RNP integrates global system of direct line of voice over IP to NOCs

Since the last Friday, May 21st, the Centro de Engenharia e Operações of RNP (CEO) is integrating a global system of direct line by voice with other network operation centers (NOCs) around the world. This hotline allows that a response to crisis and safety incidents be quicker than never. Alex Soares de Moura, a CEO technician, explains that the Inter-Network Operations Center Dial-By-ASN (INOC-DBA) hotline phone system, as it was named by the original organization, Packet Clearing House, has as objective to “provide a way to directly link the NOCs and also the safety teams of network structure providers”.

At this moment there are almost 350 operation centers connected to INOC, performing up to a thousand calls per day. The system uses the technology of voice over IP (VoIP) to create a network in which the IP telephone numbers are defined by the own numbers of autonomous system number (ASN). This means that, when a problem is identified, the responsible person of a defined area can directly call the original network operation center, through hotline, using ASN. It is quicker than finding a conventional telephone number, when a problem occurs, calling this company and finding someone of the network operation center. The responsible ones change, the telephone numbers change and maybe the company telephone operator can not be able to transfer the call to a correct sector. Using INOC the call is direct.

The Brazilian Internet Management Committee, with the support of Registro.br, is encouraging Brazilian organizations to join this project, increasing its range and providing an important tool to solve problems of Brazilian network operators and companies. To join it, RNP received from Registro.br a 7940-Model IP Cisco telephone.
