New 34 Mbps link enables resuming important projects

Carlos Henrique Milhomem is the head of the Data Processing Center at the Emílio Goeldi Museum, in Pará. In the museum, he was responsible for coordinating the installation and the configuration of the equipment, collaborating with the technicians working for RNP's PoP-PA, and for Harris do Brasil. Milhomem gave the following interview, by e-mail, to RNP's Information Center.

The Goeldi Museum network still isn't totally integrated to the new link. When do you expect the migration to end?

Carlos Henrique: We are still in a migration process, and its end is due on Friday, November 22.

Is there any perceptible improvement with the new link? How was the museum connection to the PoP-PA before this updating?

Carlos Henrique: We were connected through a 128 Kbps deterministic line only for accessing some sites. We have already started the tests with the new link and, undoubtedly, the changes have been dramatic. By analyzing connections we can say that our gain was considerable.

What are your expectations in relation to this new link? Will any project or practice be made possible with the new configuration?

Carlos Henrique: The greatest possible. Thanks to the new link, the interaction between our two complexes (the Zoo-botanical Park and the Research Campus), which are geographically distant, will increase dramatically, facilitating not only the management, research and access to the Internet, but also the use of the Intranet and the access to information in databanks. Several projects that were being delayed due to the lack of infrastructure will be carried out again.

Was the support given by RNP, Harris and the PoP-PA in the installation of this link satisfactory?

Carlos Henrique: Yes. Both Harris and RNP were extremely satisfactory. RNP, through its [Engineering and Operation Center] manager Ari Frazão, who was always with us in the installation process, helping us with all the related problems, and Harris's staff, responsible for installing the antenna, were competent in regards to deadlines and effectiveness, reaching their goals. The same is true of the PoP-PA.

Are the technical personnel at the museum prepared to deal with the radio equipment given by Harris?

Carlos Henrique: Well, this factor is still pending. Unfortunately, due to some problems faced by the museum at the end of this year, it was not possible to send a technician to the course that took place in São Paulo. We are waiting for a new possibility to get to know the equipment better.
