UnB inaugurates a new broadband connection to RNP2

Harris-RNP partnership was officially announced during the ceremony of inauguration of the University of Brasília's (UnB) radio link, on July 25th, in the university auditorium. The new connection of the university to RNP2 backbone will operate at 34 Mbps, replacing the former connection, of 8 Mbps. On that occasion, the activation of an identical link, in order to serve the needs of the Ministry of Education, was also celebrated.

RNP's partnership with Harris represents an important contribution to the support of scientific research in our institution - declared UnB's dean, Lauro Morhy.

Lauro cited as an example the difficulties faced by the biochemistry laboratory to send and receive files with protein structures. The new connection, which was already being tested about a month ago, has greatly reduced the download time of these files.

Tetsuo Haga, Harris's director in Brazil, stressed the advantages of the equipment that was lent to connect two points. Tetsuo explained that its cost is reduced since it does not require hiring services from the telecommunications operators.

Many times, the use of radio links to establish broadband connections is the only alternative. It happens in regions where the telecommunications infrastructure is still rudimentary and there is not optical fiber network.

For the director of the National Education and Research Network (RNP), Nelson Simões, the partnership came in handy. The five 34 Mbps point-to-point radio-communication links donated by Harris will be used to reach part of the goal of updating the connection of the organizations using RNP2 backbone, classified as primary institutions.

Besides the Ministry of Education and UnB, which have already activated their connections, the other institutions benefiting from the new links are Fluminense Federal University (UFF), in Rio de Janeiro; the Emílio Goeldi Museum, in Pará; and the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE). The activation of the equipment in these institutions still depends on infrastructure work for the installation of the antennae and operational tests.

According to Edmundo Pereira, Secretary of Planning, Budget and Administration of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), the success of this partnership is one more positive result of the decision to continually invest in the enlargement and renovation of the infrastructure of the Brazilian academic network.
