| RNP has implanted videoconference pilot
In order to make a videoconference model to be used in RNP2 by the Brazilian teaching and research community, RNP has created a pilot project interconnecting its units in Campinas, Recife, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília. The tests were carried out during the year 2001.
RNP's Operation Support Service (OSS) is preparing a series of documents about the project, and it has already begun to make them public through the page http://www.rnp.br/video/. The OSS also intends to make programs available to the community using RNP2 backbone so as to stimulate the use of videoconference services.
The videoconference has turned out to be an important resource both commercially and academically. This service can speed up decision making and save costs once it enables people to meet remotely; that is to say, without needing to move in order to get together in the same place. Furthermore, the videoconference is on the basis of important applications such as telemedicine and distance learning. It enables, for instance, the meeting of a group of doctors in order to make a diagnosis without their having to leave their offices (see an example in the article "A baby's heart is examined through RNP's network"). In the field of distance learning, the videoconference can help in the interaction between student and teacher besides being useful to promote virtual seminars (see, on RNP's site, the article "Rio Grande do Sul uses advanced technology in international videoconference").
In addition to the documents created by the OSS, the page which promotes the project has some useful links, a list of NewsGeneration articles dealing with the topic, and information on how to participate in the videoconf@rnp.br discussion list.
