REMAV anticipates the future of on-line news

The REMAV in Florianópolis has created a testing ground for journalism in the future. Its purpose is to analyze the tools used in the production of multimedia news in high performance networks. The project involves the course of Journalism and the High Speed Network Units and High Performance Computing (Nurcad) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC).

One of the ideas of the Multimedia News, as the project is called, is to offer alternatives so that the Internet user can get deeper knowledge of the subject in any way he wishes. An example of this initiative can be seen in
www.rmav-fln.ufsc.br/projetos/noticiario/aplicacao.htm
, where, after the news is introduced in a general text, links to several videos are offfered, complementing aspects of the news, with image quality appropriate to high or low speed access.

Journalist Fábio Almeida, one of REMAV's interns, points out that video quality, even in broadband access, still cannot be compared to that on TV. For this reason, the language used must be even more objective. Some advantages noticed by researchers were: the possibility to work with differentiated materials, such as 360° photos, Flash presentations and audio files for special coverage; the lack of space and time limitations; the possiblity to recover previous and similar news, and the interactivity in live events.

The project started in February 2000, went through some difficulties and was almost aborted in the middle of last year. Finally, it was resumed in September. Besides Almeida, the following interns are participating in the research: José Lacerda, Ana Paula Lacerda, Deny Peres, Valdecir Becker and Gisiela Klein.
