![]() | Message of RNP's director, Nelson SimõesThis updating, part of the agenda for the year 2000, had to be postponed several times due to the delay in the activation of the underwater optical cables, which happened only at the end of October 2000. The new connection will permit accessing the American, European, and Asian-Pacific academic networks, which will foster cooperation for the development of new Internet2 applications, besides increasing international scientific and technological exchanges. Furthermore, this connection will make it possible to use production applications (web, e-mail, etc) effectively - for example, international access to the full text of publications through Capes' periodical portal. We are also involved in the implantation of a second connection of 45 Mbps - whose capacity will be donated, for 3 years, by an enterprise owning an underwater cable - as well as in a possible agreement guaranteeing direct connection to Europe. This way, we will reach the goals stated in our agenda for the year 2000: to maintain the high quality in the national and international network services, as well as in agreements of traffic exchange (peering) with commercial servers in the country.
