Ivan Moura Campos is elected ICANN's director

Last Friday, October 11, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), has announced the result of the elections for At Large directors . The chairman of Internet Steering Committee in Brazil, Ivan Moura Campos, was chosen to represent Latin America and the Caribbean. Moura Campos competed with four more candidates,: two Brazilian, a Chilean and an Uruguayan.

ICANN is the organization responsible for managing the technical and political aspects of Internet administration worldwide. Its Board of Directors makes up the policies of use and technical specifications of registrations of names of domains, IP addresses and protocols used by the applications. In this sense, the function of the At Large directors is to defend the interests of the regions by which they have been elected.

In an interview to RNP News, Moura Campos declared that the main points he intends to defend are: the establishment of an organ to manage addresses for Latin America, the LACNIC; the improvement of the rules to solve extra-judicial conflicts regarding names of domains; and the installation of a root server in South America.

The electoral process began on May 22, when the Nominating Committee started choosing ICANN's nominees. In August, the Committee announced the names of the 18 nominees for the regions of Latin America/Caribbean, North America, Europe, Africa and Asia/Australia/Pacific. The self-nomination process began, when the ones who had not been chosen could ask for the support of the At Large members so as to have their names included in the ballot. Once the candidates were defined, the electors had ten days to choose their representatives.

Ivan Moura Campos holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California and is the chief executive officer of Akwan Information Technologies. One of the exponents of Internet implantation in Brazil, Campos was one of the people who proposed the model adopted in the implantation of the Internet2 in the United States. The curriculum vitae of the new At Large director for Latin America and the Caribbean as well as his proposals can be found on the ICANN site, in http://members.icann.org/cand/207.html. The result of the election, with the number of votes received by all the candidates of each region can be seen in: http://www.election.com/us/icann/icannresult.html.
