![]() | Launching a new high-technology backboneMinister Ronaldo Mota Sardenberg of Sciences and Technology officially launched the new RNP2 backbone on the 24th. The launching was announced in Belo Horizonte (MG) during the 2nd RNP2 Workshop, in the presence of representatives from High Speed Metropolitan Networks (ReMAVs), international guest speakers and individuals involved in networking technology. RNP2 has scheduled the connection of all ReMAVs by July and the link-up to the American Internet2 network to be completed in August. The new system will be able to run at up to 155 Mbps - a speed 70 times greater than that achieved by the original RNP backbone, currently in use -, enabling the development of such advanced applications as telemedicine and distance courses. In the year 2001 all federal institutions of higher learning and research should be connected to the new backbone. [RNP, 05.30.2000] |
