NTP

Through its Security Incident Response Team (CAIS), RNP has implanted a Network Time Protocol (NTP) stratum 1 server in its Point of Presence in Brasília (PoP-DF). The service, offered by RNP since July 2000, is directly connected to a reference clock, a very high precision mechanism. The reference clock used is a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver.

A hierarchy of NTP servers was established from the PoP-DF. This hierarchy has the function of distributing the processing load, ensuring a stabler and more reliable service to the final user. To use RNP’s NTP service, contact the stratum 2 servers, since access to stratum 1 is restricted to the servers making up the service hierarchy, established from:

  • support units;
  • Points of Presence (PoPs)
  • state networks;
  • any other network, in or out of RNP’s backbone, which proves to have technical capacity and convenience to act as a time base for a significant community of users, thus making it possible to create stratum 3 servers in the client networks for the use of the public in general.
