Multicast at RNP

RNP started implanting the multicast service in its Points of Presence (PoPs) in March 2002. Native multicast is being made available in the routers capable of multicast routing, that is to say, in all the PoPs with 7507 routers. In the others, a DVMRP tunnel (Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol – see RFC 1075) is being implanted between equipment running mrouted in the PoP and the closest 7507 router in the backbone’s routing structure.

The tendency is for all the PoPs to start operating native multicast in their routers as their hardware and software is replaced by newer versions.
