Videoconference at RNP

RNP has carried out experiments with videoconference technologies for IP networks, aiming at implanting a videoconference service in RNP2 backbone that can benefit all the teaching and research community in the country. Its major focus is the study of videoconference solutions compatible with the H.323 standard, of ITU-T.

RNP implanted a videoconference pilot among its units (Rio de Janeiro, Campinas, Brasília and Recife) to test this service. On this page you will find information about the project, as well as suggestions of sites and texts for reference.

Solution adopted by RNP

Through RNP2 backbone, RNP makes it possible for videoconferences to take place involving the Brazilian teaching and research community.

Virtual Rooms Videoconferencing System (VRVS), from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Through the VRVS, the user has virtual rooms available with resources for application sharing and chatting, which can be used for videoconference and the transmission of events. RNP keeps in its backbone reflectors that are used when someone in Brazil accesses one of the VRVS rooms. This application is ideal for distance learning and meetings of research groups. The users can use a personal computer with multimedia support and webcam or specific videoconference equipment. To use this service, one must register in the site of the program.

What RNP is doing

The studies and experiments carried out with videoconference at RNP have led to increased knowledge of the videoconference solutions available on the market, and they have made it possible for internal working groups - such as the Operations Support Service, the Engineering and Operation Center and the Business Management - to communicate.

Right now, a videoconference service is being implanted with resources from both RNP and partners, aiming at making available to the institutions using RNP virtual rooms for multi-point videoconferences, with an automatic scheduling system and session recording.
