The implantation of quality of service (QoS) in the backbone is essential to the success of advanced applications, such as telemedicine, videoconference and VoIP (voice over IP or telephony over IP). Besides great bandwidth, these applications require a differentiated service. In many cases it is necessary to make sure that the data transmission is made without interruptions or package loss.

In 2001, RNP assembled a pilot QoS network involving its Points of Presence (PoPs) and units in Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Distrito Federal, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais and São Paulo. The experience resulted in a proposal to implement QoS in the entire RNP2 backbone, as requested. The QoS Working Group will determine the definite architecture to be adopted in the backbone.

On this page you will find information about the implantation of QoS in RNP’s network, as well as suggestions of sites and texts for reference.
