2nd Latin American Conference for Security Incident Response

Information security is no longer an exclusive problem of the sectors related to IT, or even of a particular organization, industry or government, it is turning into regional and global strategies that allow facing, in organized format, the threats and vulnerabilities associated to technology use.

The efficiency of the Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRT) is attested for providing fast and efficient response for security incidents. By recognizing, analyzing and providing faster response to these incidents, the damages caused by them are also reduced, as well as the recovery costs.

In order to promote the culture of information security, fomenting the establishment of new incident response teams in Latin America and training the participants of the existing CSIRTs, the Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP – brazilian academic and research network) and its CSIRT, Centro de Atendimento a Incidentes de Segurança (CAIS), in cooperation with the international Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), organized the 2nd Colaris (Conferência Latino-Americana de Resposta a Incidentes de Segurança – Latin American Conference for Security Incident Response), in Rio de Janeiro from October 7 to 10 2006.

Colaris consists of two separate events, FIRST Transits Course and the 2nd Security Workshop of Latin America .

FIRST/TRANSITS Course

[Transits Logo]The FIRST/TRANSITS Course, which will be held on October 7 and 8, has the objective of providing training in response to security incidents. It is a unique opportunity for the participants to understand the basic requirements for the creation of security team, identify key questions associated with this process and finding out how to define an implementation plan of a CSIRT in their organizations, in addition to covering management, technical and operational aspects associated with the day-to-day of a CSIRT. The First Transitis Course is organized by FIRST, in cooperation with Terena (the Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association) and uses material with European pattern.

The subscription on FIRST/TRANSITS Course is restricted to guests.

2nd Security Workshop of Latin America

The 2nd Security Workshop of Latin America, which will be held on October 9 and 10, is totally open to the public and will discuss issues such as prevention and handling of incidents, vulnerability analysis, forensics, and other topics related with computational and network security. Because it has to do with an international security workshop, it will bring together some of the most respected specialists of our day.

FIRST Technical Colloquium

In the sequence, on October 11th and 12th, 2006, it will be held also in Rio, the First Technical Colloquium (TC). Limited to members of the International Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (First), the meeting has been held since 1996, predominantly in European and North American countries. The Forum, which gathers 182 Computer Security Incident Response Teams (the CSIRTs) will discuss vulnerabilities, incidents, tools and other issues that affect the work of the teams of safety incident response and disseminate good practices.

The colloquium, as a rule, takes one day, being followed by one day of practical training, in which specialists in security guide small groups of members of the First interacting directly with the participants.

The TC is organized by members of the First and, since 2005, has been performed by regions: Latin America, North America, Europe and Pacific Asia. The objective is to promote a TC per year in each region, although it may add regional initiatives of security incident response teams.
