About RNP

Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa

The National Education and Research Network (RNP) promotes the development of technologies in the field of networks and innovative applications in Brazil. It supports the use of Internet networks as facilitators of the progress of science and education in general.

RNP operates the national infrastructure of advanced network for cooperation and communication on education and research. Besides interconnecting all the federal institutions of higher education and research, this network provides a laboratory for the experimental development of new applications and network services for the benefit of the organizations using it.

This infrastructure, also called RNP2 backbone, constitutes the Brazilian academic network that makes it possible for people and resources in the country and abroad to interact. It reaches all the 27 states of the Federation with aggregated traffic capacity of 366 Mbps.

It has its own international connections with the United States, summing an external connectivity of 200 Mbps. One of these international connections is dedicated to Internet2, ensuring Brazilian access to the project that gathers academic networks in several countries. A direct connection with Europe is planned in the scope of the Latin American Cooperation on Advanced Networks (Cooperación Latinoamericana de Redes Avanzadas - Clara) initiative. RNP2 interconnects 329 national education and research institutions, serving around 800,000 users.

RNP also acts in the testing and development of pilot applications for the network and in the qualification of human resources to operate the 27 points of presence (PoPs) of RNP2, in areas such as network security, IP management, routing, high performance networks, system administration, new protocols and services.

The maintenance and updating of this network is made with resources from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) and the Ministry of Education, through a management contract between RNP Association and the MCT. Besides counting on public sponsoring, RNP, as a Priority Computer Science Program (Sepin/MCT), gets private resources by means of projects with computer science companies (Law number 8.248/91) and other organizations.

RNP network joins two types of services: the backbone for production and the backbone for experimentation.

Backbone for production

In this infrastructure are connected all the Federal Institutions of Higher Education (Instituições Federais de Ensino Superior – IFES) indicated by the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, and the Research Units of the Ministry of Science and Technology, in addition to agencies and organizations of the two ministries. Other education and research institutions, museums, hospitals, non-governmental organizations, fostering institutions and the like also make use of the academic network as long as they fit RNP2’s policy of use.

Backbone for experimentation

It is an ATM network infrastructure capable of supporting advanced Internet2 applications, including digital libraries, long-distance courses and conferences, and so on. Research is done in this backbone in order to test and develop new information and communication technologies (ICT). These technologies are the basis of the new Society of Knowledge. Its control and use are essential to Brazilian development. In this sense, the network itself is a national laboratory where ICT experiments are carried out, making it possible for its clients to benefit from their results sooner.
