Retrospective 2006: the Ipê network always faster. The RNP invested in the improvement of its national

The infrastructure is the path where the information transits and therefore it has a highlighted place in the New RNP’s plans. In order to provide for the network in a national level, the organization is always investing in the improvement of its backbone.

In March 2006, RNP improved the connection of two primary user institutes: the Renato Archer Research Center (Cenpra) and the Mamirauá Institute for Sustainable Development (IDSM). The first one started to dispose of three linkages hired by RNP, enjoying a total capacity of 6 Mbps for the outflow of its traffic with the Internet. And the second, had its linkage via satellite, which connects the unit of the Mamirauá Project in Tefé (AM) to PoP-PE, broadened from 512 Kbps to 1 Mbps. Both initiatives benefited the researchers, who started to enjoy a higher speed of information traffic and to be able to use applications that demand higher band capacity.

In April, RNP increased the traffic capacity of some of its main linkages with other networks. In the link which establishes the communication between the RNP and the Rede Rio, the traffic was broadened from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps, what provided a speed five times higher for the clients network flow of RNP and Rede Rio. The peering capacity between RNP and Embratel was also updated in two of the three existing points (RJ, SP and FD). This measure broadened the capacity of the linkages at the presence points (PoPs) of Rio and Sao Paulo for 155 Mbps, rising the traffic capacity between both networks to 330 Mbps. Such initiative solved saturation problems in the link of PoP-SP with Embratel.

optical fiber

In May, a second linkage of 34 Mbps was opened between the backbones of RNP and Intelig communication company at the federal point of networks interconnection (FIX, standing for Federal Internet Exchange), duplicating the traffic exchange capacity between clients of both organizations.

In July, the last missing linkage to turn the central loop of the entire Ipê network was activated. The central loop gathers the presence points of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Brasília. The RNP hired 10 Gbps channels for the Ipê networks in these regions because they concentrate the highest rate of information traffic in the world. Despite both channels have been made available by Embratel in 2005, the eight access doors were gradually enabled to bear the traffic at 10 Gbps. Until July, even with the potential capacity of 10 Gbps, the network operated at 2.5 Gbps.

International connections: easy access to the foreign academic networks

In August, the international traffic capacity for the user institutes of the Ipê network was increased. The linkage contracted with Global Crossing enabled the traffic of 700 Mbps, from the PoP-SP. This capacity, added the potential of the international linkage of PoP-RJ (155 Mbps), raised the traffic capacity between RNP and the commercial Internet abroad for 855 Mbps.

Besides that, RNP has connections with foreign academic networks. They are 155 Mbps for the networks of Latin American, through the Advanced Networks of the Latin American Cooperation (Clara), and 1,24 Gbps for the advanced network of the United States, Internet2, through the Western Hemisphere Research and Education Networks/Links Interconnecting Latin America (Whren/Lila) project.

The Whren/Lila linkage – which, at RNP, serves only to some specific client projects – is shared with the academic network of the state of Sao Paulo, Ansp, and with Clara Network. The RNP also takes part of the Latin America Interconnected with Europe (Alice), which, though Clara Network, guaranties the access to the Pan-European academic network, Géant.

Redecomep: metropolitan networks with own infra-structure

The year 2006 also presented the results in the metropolitan level from the advance of the Education and Research Communitarian Networks(Redecomep) initiatives, which has the purpose to widen the Ipê network through the main metropolitan regions in the country.

fiber's installation of Vitoria's metropolitan network

The implementation of the community networks were started in every Brazilian state, except Rondônia. The construction of the physical network for the metropolitan regions of Belém, Manaus, Brasília and Vitória is in progress and the network equipment is being imported. Florianópolis, Fortaleza and Natal are starting the networks construction and will also receive their equipment together in the first batch. And the metropolitan regions of Porto Alegre, Goiânia, Recife and Sao Paulo will reach the construction stage by the end of 2006. The other cities are still in the approval stage of their technical projects by RNP. Porto Velho is in the structuring stage of its management committee, which is an essential condition to start all the process.

Although the partnerships articulation process has suffered delays due to the compatibility complexity of the interests of the agents involved, it has been showing a good traffic for Redecomep not only in private enterprises but also in the public spheres. In the public sector, the partnerships with the state governments of Amazonas and Bahia and with the city halls of the cities of Vitória and Salvador brought to the project R$ 2 million more, showing the strategic importance of the initiatives for these governments.

For the purpose of providing end-to-end quality and advanced applications, in own fiber, under community management and building of partnerships, the Redecomep project, started in 2005, shall enable all the teaching and research institutes which are qualified as RNP users to have access to the Ipê Network. The initiative shall also integrate 255 public and private institutes, state and city governments, public and private enterprises of the energy (electricity) sectors, as well as urban transport.

About this report

This week, we are publishing a series of reports with the 2006 retrospective at RNP. Yesterday, we ran a conceptual presentation of New RNP. Tomorrow, we will talk about advanced applications and services for the Brazilian community of teaching and research. Also see the interactive New RNP page (in Portuguese).
